Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

a city of 250,000 pop., on Lake Michigan and Chicago River. The great Metropolis of the North-western States. Railroads centre here from all points, making it the great central depot for the shipment of the various products of the West to the Eastern markets, by way of the Lakes and through lines of Railroad. It is the largest grain market in the world, and is also extensively engaged in beef and pork packing and lumber trade. The Lake commerce is very extensive. The largest city in the State.
