In the Pit.

--In one of those holes, dug for trees, we are told, all over Capitol Square, an occurrence heart-rending, and patience transcending, took place while the soldiers were there. Some maidens, while gazing with pleasure amazing, on the picture of grim visaged war; of danger unthinking, were seen to be sinking, and screams of distress pierced the air. They were rescued undamaged by those who had managed to get to the scene of disaster; and the panic they raised up and blushes that blazed up, subsided, as they came, only faster.
