Arrival of War material.
--The steamship
Jamestown brought to this city on Thursday a lot of material for defensive purposes, including gun-carriages for rifled cannon, caissons, limbers and traveling forges, purchased by the
State of Virginia from an establishment in
Troy, N. Y. They were transferred to the
State Armory, and it was well that this operation was speedily performed, for had they remained on the steamer over night a disastrous conflagration might have resulted.-- To protect the articles from the weather, they had been covered with tarpaulin, and it is supposed, says our informant, that spontaneous combustion must have taken place, as fire was discovered in the packages on their arrival at the
Armory.
As it happened, they were not much damaged.
