An erroneous statement

is going the rounds of the newspapers to the effect that the Hon. John Cochrane, of New York, was serenaded on the night of his arrival in Richmond. How this report originated we are not prepared to say; but there is no truth in it whatever.-- Col. Lay, a gallant son of Virginia, was serenaded at the Exchange Hotel on the night alluded to, and after he had appropriately acknowledged the compliment, Mr. Cochrane was called on to make a speech by some persons who desired to hear his sentiments on the great questions of the day; but the serenading party had no connection with it.
