Polish Regiment.
--We understand, says the
Montgomery (Ala) Advertiser, that
Major G. Tochman, the well-known Polish political excite, has tendered his services to the
Confederate States, and has been authorized by the
President to raise twenty companies, to be formed into two Regiments or a Brigade.
Two companies from New Orleans have already signified their desire to be placed under his command, and on Friday last, at
Major T.'s request, the
Adjutant General sent by telegraph an order to
Lieut. Pfifer, of the
Confederate States army, to muster them into service.
Major Tochman has a large influence among his country men, and we have no doubt he will be entirely successful in his efforts at raising a Polish Brigade.
The
Major, it will be remembered, acquired quite an extensive notoriety in this country a number of years ago by his efforts to procure aid for his native
Poland in her struggle for independence.
He addressed a large number of public meetings, and by invitation, the Legislatures of New York,
Massachusetts,
New Hampshire,
Vermont,
Connecticut,
Virginia,
Ohio,
Indiana and
Kentucky.
All of these legislatures subsequently passed resolutions highly flattering to
Major T., and the cause in which he was then engaged.
He is now heartily with the
South and in all his exertions in behalf of the independence of the
Confederate States we wish him the greatest success.
