Important movement.
--The Sunday School and Colportage Board of the Baptist General Association of Virginia held its regular monthly meeting at the First Baptist Church, Thursday evening. After much earnest consultation, it was decided to take immediate steps towards securing the publication of the New Testament in this city, as it is now impossible to procure Bibles and Testaments from New York, where, up to this time, they have all been published.
We are assured by those who ought to know, that in a few months 100,000 copies of the New Testament might be sold if it were at once brought out by some house in this city.
The Baptist Board has also determined to publish religious tracts, especially adapted to soldiers.
We regard this as a most important movement.
We ought not to depend any longer on the
North for our religious publications.
Now that New York has refused to let the
Bible come South, we cannot circulate this and other good books without publishing them.
There is no point in the
South more suited for large publishing houses than
Richmond.
