First Discovery of Gold in California.

--The first man who discovered gold in California--it now turns out in consequence of investigations by the San Francisco Society of Pioneers — was Captain Jedediah S Smith, a chief trader in the employ of the American For Company, who found gold in the valley of the Sacramento as long ago as 1825. On a second expedition to the gold fields, the following year, the enterprising pioneer was killed by the Indians.
