Sales in New York, December 17, of $5.000 Va. 6's at 75; $6.600 N. C 6's at 79, and $5.000 6's at 71.

The N. Y. Journal of Commerce, of Monday afternoon says:

‘ "The money market opened with a more buoyant feeling, and the good elect of the patriotic movement of distinguished New Yorkers recreated in our columns this morning was every where visible. About meridian the advices by the Bohemian, five days later from Europe increased the prevailing cheerfulness and added to the breadth of visages which had almost grown into chronic extenuation. We may now hope that the worst of our financial panic is over. The London market is well sustained and as we have now little to fear of trouble from that side, we may hope to see our market lightening daily from the heavy pressure it has been called to sustain. We suggested the possibility of such favorable news from London. but we must confess that our hope was not as strong as our fears. and we are pleasantly disappointed at the result. We shall still have weeks perhaps months, of stagnation in business, and general depression; but all this can be borne patiently, if there is a reasonable currency given to negotiable securities; and such currency we have now a right to expect. The Persia it will be noticed, is ornging $1,000,000 in cold, and this will be quite sufficient to restore confidence as it appears to have been shipped without creating any excitement in the London market.

’ The Baltimore Exchange, of yesterday, says:

‘ We regret exceedingly to learn that the very large shipping house of Kirkland, Chase & Co., was yesterday compelled to suspend payments.--As the operations of this concern were of immense extent, their abilities must be very heavy, which however in ordinary times would be amply met by their assets. The firm was principality engaged in the South American and West India trade and did the largest mercantile business in Baltimore. It was enterprising, liberal and popular and its stoppage will be felt as a serious public calamity.
