Boston Boot and shoe Market.
--The Boston Reporter says the market is without new features of interest.
Manufacturers who are usually busy at this season, preparing goods for the
Spring trade, have as yet scarcely moved in that direction, and probably will make up for the next sale only such quantities as they can readily dispose of. In the meantime the journeymen are idle wholly or in part, and wages are as low, or lower than at any period since 1857.
Prices of stock continue to rule in favor of the buyer, and from present appearances goods can be made up next spring at very reasonable rates.
Payments from the South and West are without improvement.
Journeymen shoemakers who usually have plenty to do in December, are now discharged in large numbers in all the shoe manufacturing towns.
In
East Abington, one of the largest firms dismissed two-thirds of their cutters last week; also there has been a marked reduction in the number of workmen employed in
Marblehead and other towns in that vicinity.
