June 28th, 1861.

Judge Chilton's address to-day was brief but stirring, fucoid and to the point — the audience small and but few planters present, yet about 1,000 bales of cotton were subscribed. About 1,000 bales had been previously subscribed in another portion of the county, not more than half of which has been canvassed, and this thought by those capable of judging, that the number of bales from the whole county will reach 5,000! Should this be so, Macon county will prove her patriotism and confidence in the Government to the amount of $250,000! A quarter of a million of bonds from one county! This will do pretty well.
