We must manufacture

--Where is all the money gone? What is capital doing? It is doing little or nothing. Timid capital has withdrawn into the safe recesses of its holders' strong boxes in a large proportion, and the dollars are rusting there, when, if kept in movement in the small enterprises which invite, they might accumulate to themselves interest. Dollars are cowardly creatures, and especially craven in war times. At the first blast of the trump they creep away to hide themselves in holes and corners and vaults, whence but few are coaxed by even the strongest inducements.

When patriotism and profit both invite, as at this time, why will not capital promptly awaken and exert its thews and sinews for its own emolument and for the benefit of the country? Will it not understand that our sources of supply of many articles of necessity are cut off, and that when the remnant yet remaining of the merchants' stocks is exhausted, there will be a loud demand, and embarrassing want will ensure if it is not supplied? Whence does the capitalist think that supplies will be received during this war to undersell the productions of its investment in manufacturing enterprises?

If England does take our part and embroil herself in a war with the North--as is only possible she may — it would still be long ere supplies of many articles from her manufactories would have so abundant and uninterrupted admission to our country as to rival home productions when fairly under way. Leather has been going up the scale of quotation at a terrible rate lately, and also staple articles of clothing Fabrice. How long will it be before there is neither leather nor cloth to be had at any price which nine-tenths of the population can pay? Not long. Then let capital get to work, for about ten millions of people have to be supplied with shoes for their feet and clothing for their backs, and can pay remunerative prices therefore.

If capital will only venture forth from its hiding places and seek investment in the sound enterprises which invite, it will never regret the act of daring which required no courage, there being no risk. It will be amply rewarded in any branch of staple manufacture, and return sure and large profits; and by its movement stimulate and improve all business interests, giving a new activity to commerce and industry.--Mobile Advertiser.
