The City was yesterday alive with rumors from the various seats of war. Upon every corner men could be heard talking of the intelligence which they had heard from ‘"good authority."’ All of us hope for good news, and are ready to lend a willing car to him who brings it. What these various rumors were, or how much foundation in facts they had, we are not called upon to say, nor wise enough to tell. To-morrow, or the next day, or any other, may bring us better news than we expect, or worse than we fear, and we should be prepared for either fortune, though, truth to say, we, like everybody, else, look for none but the best from our brave armies. Our confidence in them is unbounded.

We have just remarked that we are not called upon to detail the several rumors floating upon the wave of public rumor. Nevertheless, we will mention one in which we place some confidence — namely, that on Wednesday evening a combat took place between our advanced forces in front of Arlington Heights, and those of the enemy, which resulted in the possession, by our men, of Hall's hill, an important position, and the killing and capturing of several hundred Federal soldiers.--The flying report as to a most successful movement by our forces under Gen. Lee, we are afraid to trust. We shall be content if the one or the other of these rumors should prove to be true.
