Examination of a charge, of treason
--On Saturday last, (says the
Winchester Virginian,)
Col. John Strother, of
Berkeley county, was brought, before an Examining Court of Justices, at the
Court-House in this town, to answer a charge of entertaining treasonable sentiments towards the Southern Confederacy.
He was arrested so me three weeks since at
Bath, Morgan county, by a detachment of
Col. Augus McDonald's cavalry, and has since that time been held as a prisoner at the camp of the, cavalry, about a mile south of this place, having refused to give any pledge of loyalty or to gain his liberty on parole of honor.
The
Court demanded security of
Mr. S. for his appearance to answer any indictment which a grand jury may find against him for treasonable conduct; and the security being given, he was discharged.
Mr. Strother is the father of the notorious ‘"
Dave Strother,"’ who has thrown off all disguise and is now in full fellowship with
Lincoln's vandals.
Edmund Pendicton, of
Berkeley, who was arrested at
Bath at the same time, and brought to this place as a prisoner, soon gave a pledge to abstain from any disloyal or treasonable conduct, and was released.
Selbert Bowers, of Gerardstown,
Berkeley county, who was also arrested, has been, we sent to
Richmond, to be disposed of by the authorities there.
Amongst the charges against him, is the grave one of having been a member of
Carlile's treasonable Convention at
Wheeling.
There are others in
Berkeley and
Morgan counties who will probably be soon caught and made to answer treasonable charges.
