The City Post-office.
No event has Illustrated with more force the fact that
Richmond is now the metropolis of a great nation, and not a mere provincial town, than the extension of the Post-Office hours to 9 o'clock P. M. This departure from the rule of the past century has been rendered necessary by the exigencies of the times, as well as the fact which we have mentioned, that our city is the
Capital of the
Confederates States of
America, The new rules went into operation last Thursday night, and had the fact been made known in advance, it is probable we should have seen a great rush of correspondents, who would have visited the office at an unusual hours merely to give the new thing a trial.
As it was, however, the receipts of the night amounted to only ten cents, for one heavy letter prepaid.
Of letters delivered no account was kept, yet we presume there were some.
We like the new rule, and have no doubt of its beneficial result.
