naval engagement off the Delta.
New Orleans, Oct. 12.
--A naval engagement begun this morning at 3 o'clock 45 minutes, at the head of the Passes, and lasted an hour.
It was renewed again at 9 o'clock.
The following message has been sent by Commodore Hollins to the Navy Department at Richmond: ‘
"Forty Jackson, 2 P. M., Oct. 12. --Last night I attacked the blockaders with my little fleet.
I succeeded after a very short struggle in driving them all aground on the Southwest Pass Bar, except the Preble, which I sunk.--I captured a prize from them, and after I got them fast in the sand.
I peppered them well.
There were no casualties on our side.
It was a complete success." ’

New Orleans, Oct. 13.
--The force of the Federal fleet was forty guns and nearly one thousand men, while the little Confederate mosquito fleet carried sixteen guns and about three hundred men. It is reported that our iron steamer sunk the Preble with her steel prow.
Commodore Hollins arrived in this city at a late hour last night.
