McClellan ready, and Promises an Early attack
--The Norfolk
Day Book, of the 22d instant, says:
‘
Intelligence has been conveyed to us that
McClellan was preparing to cross the
Potomac; and when our informant left the point of observation the necessary preparations were very nearly completed.
The
Yankees are represented as being about to make one more great effort, upon which they rest their ability to subjugate the
South.
That they may have nothing to upbraid themselves with in case of defeat, they have even gone so far as to ask the direction and blessing of God.
To this end Friday last was observed, in
Washington city, as a day of fasting and prayer.
We learn that the seeming tardiness of
Gen. McClelian in moving forward, has been explained by that officer to the satisfaction of the
Cabinet.
In a recent private conference with them he made a statement of the motives by which he was actuated, and declaring among other things, that up to that time he had not been thoroughly prepared for an advance, but that now he was ready and that the forward move should at once be made.
