The Courts.
Mayor's Court.--The following cases were before the
Mayor yesterday:
Charles H. Miller and
Charles Bradford, for fighting in the street, were required to give security for good behavior.
John F. Hockaday, a soldier, charged with breaking a paling, and striking watchman
Pearce on the head with it, was held to bail to answer an indictment for the offence.
Michael Walls and
Wm. J. McCarty, for assaulting and beating
Patrick Slattery, were discharged.
A full examination was had of the charge against
Benjamin Gottlieb, for stealing hogs from John Clash.
The evidence against Gotilieb was sufficiently strong, in the opinion of His Honor, to send him on for examination before the Hustings Court.
Fritz Freeman, an employee of
Gottlieb, also implicated in the larceny, by the evidence of
Mrs. Wray, was also sent on. Both parties were admitted to bail in the sum of $500.
Thomas R. Stewart was build to appear and answer an indictment for selling liquor without license.
Jacob Keck, for selling in the
Second Market after the hour of closing, was fined $2.
John Pendergrast, for garroting
John McCarty, and robbing him of $150, was sent on for examination before the Hustings Court.
Edmond, slave of
Mrs. John Allen, for threatening to cut the heart out of Nathan, slave of
H. Stern, was ordered twenty-five lashes.
Joe, slave of —
Stanard, found with a Liam and shoulder of bacon in a bag, which he alleged he had bought from another negro, was ordered to be whipped.
John Donchoe complained that
Michael Finney struck him for nothing at all. The complaint was dismissed at defendant's cost.
The following cases were continued until to-day: Meriwether Quaries, for stealing $445 from
John H. Scribner;
Patrick Callaban, for stealing four caps from
George S. Beatty, and
A. B. Lipscomb, for permitting a blacksmith shop to become a nuisance.
The investigation of the fight at the 2d Market, last Saturday, is postponed for one week —
Raymond, the principal witness, being too severely beaten to appear yet.
Hustings Court.--Yesterday,
Wm. D. Bowman, indicted for felony, was brought to the bar of this Court for trial, when, for good cause shown, his trial was postponed until the next term, and the prisoner set at large upon bail.
The trial of
Edward Keeling, indicted for felony, was also postponed until the next term, and the prisoner remanded to jail.
John Latigan was tried for stealing a sum of money from
J. R. Keiningham, and convicted and sent to the Penitentiary for two years.
James Austin was tried for felony and acquitted.
Upon petition of
Edmand F. Goode, setting forth that his son was unlawfully held by
Capt. W. S. Reid, a writ of
habeas corpus was awaited
commanding Capt. Reid to bring
H. C. Goode before the
Court to-day at 1 P. M.
The
Court adjourned until 10 o'clock this morning.
The Supreme Court of Appeals adjourned to meet on the 12th of October, and will sit if a sufficient number of Judges are in attendance.
The C. S. District Court,
Judge J. D. Haly Burton, will sit on the 10th instant, and it is contemplated that the
Court will be occupied in the trial of several important felony cases.
