The following is an extract from a letter of an intelligent gentleman, recently arrived from New York, and whose high social position gave him every opportunity to acquire correct information:
‘
"
Mr. Chase brought four millions of gold from
Washington to New York, put them into the hands of proper agents, sent them to the
Exchange, and filled the room and coal-hole with them, until, after three days hammering, gold had fallen 23 per cent. A rise is, of course expected; but
Mr. Chase, I find, is by good judges, considered the backbone of the
Federal Cabinet.
Men who condemn his tricks, false news sent to
Europe, etc. still give him credit for great energy and stubborn will."
