Personal difficulty.
--
Henry R. Pollard appeared before the
Mayor yesterday to answer the charge of assaulting
Thos. McMahon in the street.
A large number of witnesses were examined, the substance of whose evidence we append.
On the 17th inst., an article written by
Mr. Pollard appeared in the
Examiner, reflecting severely on
Mr. McMahon, as an employee in the Post Office Department.--
Mr. McM.
was taunted by his fellow clerks about this article, and to escape their annoyance, remarked to them that the editor of the paper had disclaimed any intension of reflecting upon him. This statement was repeated to
Mr. Pollard by some one, and on Monday last
Mr. P. seeing
Mr. McM.
in the street approached him, and said to him, "I understand you have stated that the article in the
Examiner was not designed for you." McM. then asked, "Are you the author?" P. replied, "I am," and with an oath, added, "it was designed for you and no one else, " With this a scuffle earned, both parties using their canes.
In the McMse word became unsheathed, and
Pollard received two punctures in the left fore arm. Finding himself wounded,
Pollard stepped back to draw his pistol, seeing which McM. retreated up the steps of the Secession Club-room, and shortly there after P. fired his pistol up the steps, but with out doing any damage.
McM. was suffering with rheumatism in the hip and muscles of the leg at the time.
He disclaimed any intention of using the award on P., and said he had not wounded him designedly.
As there were other witnesses to examine, the
Mayor adjourned the case till to-day, and held both parties to $500 bail for their appearance.
