The alleged impressments at depots and on the highways to Richmond.
To the Editor of the Richmond Dispatch:An order from the Secretary of War, dated as far back as March last, forbids the impressment of articles of subsistence en routs to this city; and no unpressments of such goods have been made at all, whether on their way to or within the city; nor are Government agents permitted to impress at depots on the highways. They have made no such impressments. If the speculators were driven off, and the Subsistence Department and consumers will agree to unite and confine their purchases to the schedule of prices established by the Commissioners of the State, as they have been invited to do, the supply would be found abundant for both. But if the speculator should be allowed to purchase ad libilum, as they are now doing to a greater or less extent in this city, and hoard the necessaries of life, meting them out only in merciless extortion, as he pleases, serious evils and embarrassments to our country will arise. Drive speculation off, and it will be found that producers and manufacturers have enough and to spare for both the army and the people.
