A substitute for quinine.

--A New Orleans refugee, now residing in Mobile, while on a visit to this section some two or three weeks ago, informed us that Dr. McFarliane--one of the oldest and most distinguished physicians of New Orleans, who died in that city since the commencement of the war — had discovered what he considered a most valuable-substitute for quinine, and expressed a short time before his death, his deep regret that he should not live long enough to see it tested throughout the Confederacy. The substitute is the leaves of balsam apple, to be steeped for three or four days in a bottle of whiskey — Dose one table spoonful three times a day.--Orenboro' Beacon
