What of the mule?

The escaped Yankees say that they ate mule meat when in prison here. Well, what of it? It was vastly too good for men who have essayed to bring starvation on the people who captured them, and they would have no right to complain if they were forced to that fate they designed for us.--Better men have eaten mule meat, and thought it very good. Even that Northern patriot Fremont has supped so full of it that he has been braying ever since. But the Yankees lied. The mule has not come to that fate yet. He is one of our institutions. He is cousin german to the negro, and too important to be fed to Yankees. The anatomist who detected the mule bones in the meat sent to him was a charlatan, as Yankees generally are. He knew nothing of bones, and makes no bones of lying.
