Mayor's Court.
--The following cases occupied the attention of the
Mayor yesterday:
Patrick Foley, a white boy, and
Anderson Jackson, free negro, were arraigned on the charge of stealing eighty-four heads of cabbage from
Augustus P. Crenshaw.
On Saturday night two men in a small boat rowed up to the side of the canal running along
Mr. Crenshaw's cabbage patch, about two miles from the city, and getting out proceeded to pull up and cut off some eighty odd, which were placed in the boat and taken in the direction of this city.
A negro fellow who was watching followed on behind and traced them to the house of
Maria Wade, a short distance from the canal bank and the
Petersburg depot.
This information was given to
officer Kelly, who searched
Mrs. Wade's house Tuesday, where he found hid away under the floor about forty cabbages, and the prisoners at the bar, in one of the rooms of the building.
Another witness testified to having loaned the accused his boat on the night of the robbery, which was loaded when they returned with cabbages.
They gave him some four or five heads for the use of his boat, but failed to answer his question how they came in possession of such a large lot. The white boy and
Mrs. Wade were sent on for indictment by the grand jury, and the negro was ordered thirty lashes, after which he was to be taken to the batteries.
Margaret, slave of
Mrs. Lynch, charged with using insolent language towards
Mrs. Bersh, was ordered to be whipped.
A dispute occurred in the
Second Market between
Mrs. B. and the servant, who sells thereat, about the kind of ballad offered for sale — Margaret saying it was turnip ballad, and
Mrs. B. styling it mustard — during which the lie was given by the black vender of vegetables.
The owner of the negro appealed to His Honor to revoke his decision, as her servant was of unexceptionable character, while the complainant was known by everybody, particularly the members of the police, as a woman not to be believed on oath.
Several of the officers were thereupon sworn, neither of whom knew anything derogatory to
Mrs. B.'s good name.
His Honor adhered to the decision.
Barney Tracey, charged with assaulting and beating
Lewis Antelotti, on Sunday afternoon last, was sent on for indictment by the
Grand Jury, and held to bail for his appearance.
William, slave of
Sylvester Magruder, was ordered to be whipped for stealing a pair of boots from
Elizabeth Dawson.
Florence Rivers, charged with stealing
wearing apparel and jewelry from
Ann M. Myers, was, after the testimony of witnesses, discharged.
