Attempt to escape from Castle Thunder.
--Night before last an attempt was made by the citizen prisoners in Castle Thunder to escape from confinement, which, but for the vigilance of the militia guard on duty, would have proved successful.
These prisoners were confined in an apartment which over looks the rear alley, the back part of which consists only of three planks, boarded up, and the whole together measuring about two and a half or three inches in thickness.
With a couple of small
pocket- knives, two of these planks were cut through, and considerable progress was made with the third before the sentinel nearest by overheard them at work and gave the alarm.
Immediately the entire police force was aroused, and on ascertaining the locality in which the operations were going on they set to work to change the quarters of those confined therein to another and more secure part of the building.
This is the first attempt at escape which has been made for some months back.
