Burglaries.
--On Friday night the grocery store of
L. Oldham & Co. was broken into and robbed of about six thousand dollars' worth of groceries, consisting of two sacks of coffee, fifteen pounds of butter, ten pairs of women's home-made shoes, seventy-five pounds of sugar, a lot of baskets, and a small amount of money.
In the same drawer from which the money alluded to was taken, there were between five and six hundred dollars which the thieves failed to discover, while in a paper box on one of the shelves near the cash drawer were four hundred dollars more, also undiscovered.
The entrance to the store was effected through the rear door, which was bored in several places by a large one-inch augur, thereby loosening the lock inside in such a manner as to make it an easy matter to push it from its fastening.
An attempt was made by the same means some months since to rob this store, but the thieves were frightened off before completing their operations.
On the same night the residence of
Mr. Johnston T. Jones, at the head of Clay street, was entered and robbed of his family supply of provisions.
A valuable gold watch and chain, which
Mr. Jones had deposited on a table in his chamber, was also carried off. On Saturday morning the basement door to the residence was standing open, but as the lock was uninjured, it is not known whether the door was opened by means of false keys or left unlocked by the family before retiring the night before.
