Mayor's Court.
--Among the cases disposed of in this court yesterday morning we cite the following:
William Barlow, white, was charged with being drunk, disorderly and disturbing persons living in his neighborhood.
A neighbor of the accused stated that while drunk, on Monday, he broke in his own house with an axe, with the intention, as he supposed, of killing his wife, as he had frequently threatened to kill her before.
Finding that
Mrs. Barlow had fled from her house, he then started next door in search of her, with the axe in his hand.
He, the witness, met him at the head of the steps and prevented the prisoner from coming in. When sober, he was regarded as a good neighbor and a peaceable man; but, when drunk, no man was more troublesome.--Upon being asked by the
Mayor whether she had any complaint to make against her husband,
Mrs. Barlow stated, in an agitated manner, that she was afraid he would kill her. When drunk, he had repeatedly threatened her life, and she was compelled to run away from her house to prevent his doing so. The
Mayor decided the matter by holding him to security in the sum of $300 to keep the peace, which requirement the accused failed to comply with up to the hour of adjournment, and he was therefore carried to jail, in company with other prisoners.
Michael Neville was required to give security for assaulting and beating
John Murphy in the public street.
John Murphy, a soldier, the victim of
Neville's wrath, referred to above, charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct in the street, was sent to the
Provost-Marshal.
Charles Pryor, a free negro, charged with stealing
Major Stephen R. Dickey's valise, containing $500 worth of
wearing apparel, was committed to jail to await a hearing of the case at a future day.
