--The Lynchburg
Republican gives the following particulars of the wounding of
Colonel Mosby:
‘
"The gallant partizan chief,
Colonel John S. Mosby, was severely, though not dangerously, wounded on Thursday night last in
Prince William country.--He had started on one of his daring expeditions, and stopped at the house of a friend, with three or four of his men, to get supper.
While engaged at his meal; a party of the enemy came up and fired through the windows, one of the balls striking
Mosby in the abdomen, but, fortunately, without penetrating, ranged around and came out just above and back of the hip. The enemy then rushed into the house, but the lady whose guest he was, with ready presence of mind, cut off the stars from his coat collar, which indicated his rank, before they got in the room, and upon inquiring who it was they had shot, were told that it was 'one of
Mosby's lieutenants.' They examined his wound, and thinking from the direction of the ball that it was mortal, left him where he was, remarking that the 'd — d thief would do his master no more service.' They then decamped, and as soon as they were out of reach,
Mosby was removed to a place of safety, where he is kindly cared for, and we hope sincerely will rapidly recover. "
