A Mistake.
--We have been officially informed that the rumor which has been prevailing for several days past, to the effect that, in a few days, the gas throughout the city will be turned off for three or four weeks, in order to permit some repairs to the works, is without foundation.
No such unfortunate interruption is contemplated, and doubtless the report was started by certain parties, that some plausible excuse might be given for the extraordinary increase which has taken place in the price of candles.
Persons withholding them, therefore, from the market, with a view to any such contingency as the shutting off of the gas, had as well bring them forth, if they desire to get a fair price and contribute to the public good.
