Mr. Sumner's declaration in the United States Senate that "the name of Taney (late Chief Justice) will be hooted down the page of history, and an emancipated country will fasten upon it the stigma it deserves,--a disgrace to the judiciary of the country and the age, " will hardly disturb the quiet of the great jurist's shade. So many other men, and so many other things, will have to be "hooted down" for similar offences that the departed Chief will have plenty of company. He can go floating down "the page of history" on the wreck of the American Constitution, with all the great statesmen who constructed and illustrated that great, but unfortunate production of American genius and patriotism. Everything is "hooted down" or shot down that was ever enshrined in the love and admiration of the American people. Massachusetts spits upon the grave of Daniel Webster and sends Charles Sumner to occupy his place in the Senate. The wisest and most virtuous-living citizens of the North are ostracized, and every utterance of reason and moderation is promptly "hooted down." Resistance to oppression, once considered the first duty of freemen, is now punished as a capital crime, and rebellion, once a pride and glory of Revolutionary America, is now "hooted" at, as the climax of all human wickedness. Whether the stars of American greatness in former times will disappear from the firmament, because the owls of fanaticism are trying to hoot them down, will remain for posterity to decide.
