This city was once very small, but Constantius, when he was still a Caesar, in order that the neighbours [p. 465] might have a secure place of refuge, at the same time that he built another city called Antoninupolis, surrounded Amida with strong walls and towers; and by establishing there an armoury of mural artillery, he made it a terror to the enemy and wished it to be called after his own name.
