Affairs on the Rapidan — the enemy Retiring towards Fredericksburg.
The reports which we have from the line of the
Rapidan, if correct, lessen the probabilities of an immediate general engagement.
Meade is represented to be withdrawing the main body of his force from the position taken up on
Mine Run, and to be moving in the direction of
Fredericksburg — whether to go into winter quarters at that point, or to push his advance on
Richmond, can only be conjectured.
Our cavalry is not inactive, and maintains its reputation for alertness.
From a dispatch received by a gentleman in this city yesterday, we learn that
General Rosser's brigade made an attack on Sunday upon the camp of the
Federal cavalry division of
Gen. Gregg and succeeded in routing the enemy and capturing the camp.
A large number of the enemy were killed and wounded, and one hundred and ten prisoners taken.
In this dash a number of wagons and a considerable lot of camp equipage were also captured.
