Hesperides: nymphs who were fabled to guard, with the aid of a dragon, the garden in which golden apples grew in the Islands of the Blest; used allusively and as sing. Per. I. i. 27 “this fair , With golden fruit, but dangerous to be touch'd” ; transf. applied to the garden LLL. IV. iii. 341 (ref. to the 11th Labour of Hercules).
