Martlemas: old form of ‘Martinmas’; in 2H4 II. ii. 112 “how doth the , your master?” used derisively of Falstaff; perhaps short for ‘Martlemas beef’=meat of an ox slaughtered and salted at Martinmas; cf. 1H4 III. iii. 198 “O! my sweet beef.”
