LARES
(Henchir Lorbeus) Tunisia.
An extensive site 15 km SE of Le Kef on the road from Le Kef
to Thala, the ancient city at several troubled periods
played a strategic role. A fortified town which served
as a military base for Marius against Jugurtha, it immediately became on the creation of Nova Africa an
important crossroads which served in particular Sicca
Veneria. It was undoubtedly a colony under Hadrian.
Considered the gateway of the grain fields of the N, it
again played an important role at the end of antiquity.
Justinian fortified it with an encircling wall flanked by
towers, round ones at the angles and square on the sides.
In the interior were included numerous edifices, among
them a basilica converted later into a mosque.
