ABONUTEICHOS
later IONOPOLIS (Inebolu) Pontus, Turkey.
A minor city, presumably an Ionian
foundation, halfway along the inhospitable Paphlagonian
shore of the Black Sea (Pontus Euxinus). It achieved
full civic status in the 1st c. A.D. and adopted the name
Ionopolis under Marcus Aurelius. Its only claim to
fame (considerable at the time) was as the seat of the
bogus oracle set up by the charlatan Alexander (Luc.
Pseudomantis). Traces of ancient walls have been recorded on the acropolis, and architectural fragments are
common in the town.
