NURSIA (Norcia) Umbria, Italy.

The northernmost town of the Sabines, on the upper Nar system; it first appears in history in 205 B.C. when it furnished volunteers for Scipio (Livy 28.45.19). The birthplace of Sertorius and of Vespasia Polla, mother of Vespasian, it was a municipium at the time of the social war but did not become a colonia. It was famous for the rigors of its climate and its turnips. Ancient remains are scant.
