(Reina) Badajoz, Spain.
Near Llerena. Pliny (
3.14) locates this town in the Baeturia Turdulorum, and it is also mentioned by Ptolemy (2.4.10),
the
Antonine Itinerary (415.1), the Cosmographer of
Ravenna (315.1), and the inscriptions (
CIL II, 1037-38).
Regina was a stage on the Roman road, of which several
km survive nearby.
Remains of the theater include the outer walls and
part of the vaulted passageway that supported the upper
rows of the cavea. At the back of the stage building are
parts of a wall with three doors set in vaulted niches; the
rear wall of the building has smaller vaulted niches between these doors. The theater is small (diameter 55 m,
wall of the scaena 38 m long) and is built of stone and
concrete. The lower parts have not yet been excavated.
Casual finds include Roman iron tools, inscriptions,
and fragments of sculpture, most of which are in the
Badajoz Archaeological Museum. The perimeter of the
ancient town has not yet been satisfactorily traced.
