A. Infinitiv ohne Artikel.

472. a) Infinitiv ohne Artikel als Subjekt und Prädikat.

Der Infinitiv ohne Artikel tritt auf:

a) als grammatisches Subjekt. *k, 173 πάντεσσιν ἐπὶ ξυροῦ ἵσταται ἀκμῆς | μάλα λυγρὸς ὄλεθρος Ἀχαιοῖς ἠὲ βιῶναι. a, 392 οὐ μὲν γάρ τι κακὸν βασιλευέμεν. Aesch. Ag. 584 ἀεὶ γὰρ ἡβᾷ τοῖς γέρουσιν εὖ μαθεῖν. S. OC. 766 ἦν μοι τέρψις ἐκπεσεῖν χθονός. Ant. 233 ἐνίκησεν μολεῖν. 755 τίς δ̓ ἔστ᾽ ἀπειλὴ πρὸς κενὰς γνώμας λέγειν; 1030 τίς ἀλκὴ τὸν θανόντ᾽ ἐπικτανεῖν; Eur. M. 651 Ch. μόχθων δ̓ οὐκ ἄλλος ὕπερθεν γᾶς πατρίας στέρεσθαι. Hdt. 3.81 μὲν εἴ τι ποιέει, γινώσκων ποιέει, τῷ δὲ οὐδὲ γινώσκειν (— intelligentia) ἔνι. Th. 1.5 οἷς κόσμος (ἐστὶκαλῶς τοῦτο δρᾶν. 2, 54 ἐνίκησε δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ παρόντος εἰκότως λοιμὸν εἰρῆσθαι, ubi v. Poppo-Stahl. X. R. L. 9, 2 ἕπεται τῇ ἀρετῇ σῴζεσθαι εἰς τὸν πλείω χρόνον μᾶλλον τῇ κακίᾳ. P. Menex. 247b εἶναι τιμὰς γονέων ἐκγόνοις καλὸς θησαυρός, dass den Eltern Ehren zu teil werden, s. Stallb. b) als Prädikat in Verbindung mit ἐστί nur bei Angaben einer Begriffsbestimmung. Ar. Pl. 552 πτωχοῦ . . βίος . . ζῆν ἐστιν μηδὲν ἔχοντα. P. Gorg. 476d τὸ δίκην διδόναι πότερον πάσχειν τί ἐστιν ποιεῖν; Crat. 408, a τὸ δὲ λέγειν δή ἐστιν εἴρειν. Theaet. 163, d ἆρα τὸ ὁρᾶν οὐκ αἰσθάνεσθαι λέγεις; (ohne λέγεις: τὸ ὁρᾷν ἐστιν αἰσθάνεσθαι). 176, b ὁμοίωσις δὲ (sc. θεῷ) δίκαιον καὶ ὅσιον μετὰ φρονήσεως γενέσθαι sc. ἐστίν. Vgl. Crat. 385, b1).

c) als epexegetischer Zusatz oder als Apposition zu einem vorangehenden Substantive oder Pronomen. *n, 367 ὑπέσχετο δὲ μέγα ἔργον, | ἐκ Τροίης ἀέκοντας ἀπωσέμεν υἷας Ἀχαιῶν. Vgl. *k, 40. *m, 243 εἶς οἰωνὸς ἄριστος, ἀμύνεσθαι περὶ πάτρης. Hdt. 1.32 εἰ μή οἱ τύχη ἐπίσποιτο, πάντα καλὰ ἔχοντα εὖ τελευτῆσαι τὸν βίον. Pl. civ. 566, b τὸ δὴ τυραννικὸν αἴτημα . ., αἰτεῖν τὸν δῆμον φύλακάς τινας τοῦ σώματος. Crit. 45, c οὐδὲ δίκαιόν μοι δοκεῖς ἐπιχειρεῖν πρᾶγμα, σαυτὸν προδοῦναι. Vgl. Lach. 200, b. C. 8.7.10 καὶ ὑμᾶς δὲ οὕτως ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἐπαίδευον, τοὺς μὲν γεραιτέρους προτιμᾶν, τῶν δὲ νεωτέρων προτετιμῆσθαι. P. Phaed. 70c εἰ τοῦθ᾽ οὕτως ἔχει, πάλιν γίγνεσθαι ἐκ τῶν ἀποθανόντων τοὺς ζῶντας. Vgl. Anmerk. Wenn oben gesagt ist, dass der Infinitiv als grammatisches Subjekt auftritt, so ist dies nicht so zu verstehen, als ob auch die Sprache ihn als Subjekt, mithin als vollen Substantivbegriff empfunden hätte. Dies ist wenigstens für Homer unwahrscheinlich und lässt sich überhaupt nur da mit Sicherheit behaupten, wo der Infinitiv in Verbindung mit dem Artikel erscheint. Es ist für das Sprachgefühl ein wesentlicher Unterschied zwischen: χαλεπόν ἐστι βασιλεύειν, schwer ist es, zu regieren, und: χαλεπόν ἐστι τὸ βασιλεύειν, das Regieren ist schwer. In dem ersteren Falle tritt die verbale Natur des Infinitivs in den Vordergrund, in dem zweiten die substantivische. Analog sind auch die Fälle unter b) und c) zu beurteilen.(Smyth 1970)

473. b) Infinitiv ohne Artikel als Ergänzung von Satzgliedern und Sätzen.

Der Infinitiv ohne Artikel dient ferner als Ergänzung von transitiven und intransitiven Verben, von Adjektiven und Substantiven. Die Ausdrücke, zu denen der Infinitiv als Ergänzung hinzutritt, sind folgende:

Die Ausdrücke des Denkvermögens oder der Äusserung desselben: denken, meinen, glauben, hoffen, sagen, behaupten, schwören, versprechen und das Gegenteil, als: λογίζεσθαι, ἡγεῖσθαι, οἴεσθαι, νομίζειν, ὑποπτεύειν, argwöhnen, vermuten, ὕποπτον εἶναι, im Verdachte stehen, ποιεῖσθαι, dafür halten, ἐλπίζειν, δοκεῖν meinen u. scheinen, φαίνεσθαι, videri, u. a.; λέγειν, φάναι, μνημονεύειν, ὀμνύναι, ὑπισχνεῖσθαι, ἀπειλεῖν, αἰτιᾶσθαι, accusare, ἀρνεῖσθαι, ἀπιστεῖν u. a. X. A. 2.2.13 λογιζόμενοι ἥξειν ἅμα ἡλίῳ δύνοντι εἰς κώμας. Dem. 18.184 (οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι) περὶ πλείονος ἐποιοῦντο τὴν τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἐλευθερίαν διατηρεῖν τὴν ἰδίαν πατρίδα. X. A. 1.3.1 ὑπώπτευον ἤδη ἐπὶ βασιλέα ἰέναι. Hier. 1, 15 τοὺς ἐπαινοῦντας τί δοκεῖς εὐφραίνειν, ὅταν ὕποπτοι ὦσιν ἕνεκα τοῦ κολακεύειν τοὺς ἐπαίνους ποιεῖσθαι; z, 314 ἐλπωρή τοι (sc. ἐστίνἔπειτα φίλους ἰδέειν. Th. 7.46 ἐν ἐλπίδι ὢν τὰ τείχη τῶν Ἀθηναίων αἱρήσειν. X. H. 7.5.6 ἐνταῦθα διέτριβεν ἐλπίζων τοὺς Ἀθηναίους παριόντας λήψεσθαι. Prägnant: Hdt. 2.174 ὅσοι μὲν αὐτὸν τῶν θεῶν ἀπέλυσαν μὴ φῶρα εἶναι, freisprechend erklärten, und gleich darauf das Gegenteil: ὅσοι δέ μιν κατέδησαν φῶρα εἶναι, gleichs. ihn bindend überführten, s. Valcken. 4, 68 ἢν μὲν καὶ οὖτοι . . καταδήσωσι (sc. αὐτὸνἐπιορκῆσαι. Ebenso καταφρονῶ c. inf. prägnant st. διὰ καταφρόνησιν ἡγοῦμαι, meine verächtlich: Hdt. 1.66 καταφρονήσαντες Ἀρκάδων κρέσσονες εἶναι. Th. 3.83 οἱ δὲ καταφρονοῦντες κἂν προαισθέσθαι. X. H. 4.5.12 κατεφρόνουν διὰ τὰς ἔμπροσθεν τύχας μηδένα ἂν ἐπιχειρῆσαι σφίσιν. Vgl. 5. 4, 45 κἀκεῖνοι, μάλα πρόσθεν μέγα φρονοῦντες μὴ ὑπείξειν τοῖς Θηβαίοις, ἔφυγον. Mehr Beispiele s. § 475, 4.

Anmerk. 1. Dass nach den Verben des Sagens auch ὅτι od. ὡς, dass, sehr selten aber nach den Verben des Glaubens, sowie nach φάναι gebraucht werden, werden wir § 550, A. 1 sehen. Vereinzelt ὥστε: S. OC. 970 δίδαξον, εἴ τι θέσφατον πατρὶ | χρησμοῖσιν ἱκνεῖθ̓, ὥστε πρὸς παίδων θανεῖν; hierin liegt der Sinn: ein Götterspruch von der Art, dass er von seinen Söhnen getötet werde. Eur. Or. 52 ἐλπίδα δὲ δή τιν᾽ ἔχομεν, ὥστε μὴ θανεῖν, eine Hoffnung der Art, dass wir nicht sterben. [Aber ἐλπίζειν, ὡς c. acc. et inf. X. H. 6.5.42 gehört zu § 550, A. 3, b).] Einige der genannten Verben werden in anderer Bedeutung mit dem Partizipe verbunden, s. § 484. Über μή, μὴ οὐ bei dem Infinitive nach ἀρνεῖσθαι, ἀπιστεῖν u. ähnl. s. § 516, 2. 3. 4.

Anmerk. 2. Wenn nach den Verben des Glaubens und Meinens bei dem Infinitive δεῖν weggelassen zu sein scheint, so ist der Grund hiervon der, dass οἴεσθαι, ἡγεῖσθαι neben der gewöhnlichen Bedeutung meinen auch den Sinn gemeint, gesonnen sein, willens sein haben (ebenso wie δοκεῖ μοι nicht bloss = es scheint mir, sondern auch = ich beschliesse)2). Pl. Phil. 59, a εἰ περὶ φύσεως ἡγεῖταί τις ζητεῖν. X. H. 4.7.4 οἱ δ̓ ἄλλοι στρατιῶται ᾤοντο ἀπιέναι. 5. 1, 15 οἴεσθε καὶ ὑμεῖς ταῦτα πάντα καρτερεῖν.(Smyth 2016)
