διέφερον: voted in the division (iv. 138. 1). For the solemn procedure cf. Plut. Per. 32; Dem. de Cor. 134. Plutarch (Them. 17; de Her. Mal. 40. 871 D) makes every general vote the second prize to Themistocles. A similar story is told of contending sculptors who agreed in giving the second place to the Amazon of Polycleitus (Plin. N. H. xxxiv. 53).
