κατάλυσιν, sc. τοῦ πολέμου.
ἐν τῇ βασιλέως χώρᾳ ἢ ὅσης ἄρχει. A comprehensive phrase, probably without real distinction, but intended to guard against a breach of the contract on the part of Persia, which might occur where an empire was extensive and adherence loose. Some outlying dependency of Persia might assail the Peloponnesians, and they wish to force the king's hand, leaving him no excuse for not assisting. Persia must either assist or declare that the attacking state is no part of its empire. Grote (c. lxi. note) supposed the former part of the expression to mean the continent of Asia, and the latter ‘as much as the satraps should find it convenient to lay hands upon of that which had belonged to Darius Hystaspes and Xerxes.’
