2.. intr., fall upon, like lightning, πρᾶγμα δεῦρ᾽ ἐπέσκηψεν it came to this point, A.Eu.482; νόσος ἐπέσκηψεν πολλή (v.l.ἐν-) Plu.Thes.15; ἂν ἔρως ἐπισκήψῃId.2.767d, cf. 701c; “αὐτῷ θάνατοςPhilum.Ven.31.3.
3.. γᾷ ἐπισκήπτων χέρα resting hand on earth, i.e.calling earth to witness, B.7.41: abs., “γᾷ -σκήπτων πιφαύσκωId.5.42.
III.. as Att. law-term, generally in Med., denounce a person, so as to begin a prosecution for perjury (cf. “ἐπίσκηψις11), διεμαρτύρησε οὑτοσί . . : ἐπισκηψαμένων δ᾽ ἡμῶν . . . . δίκη τῶν ψευδομαρτυριῶν εἰσῄει, i.e.a διαμαρτυρία was entered . . : we replied by an ἐπίσκηψις . . , and the action for false witness was brought on, Is.5.17; in full, “. τινὶ ψευδομαρτυριῶνD.29.7; (sc. τῇ θεῷ οὐδὲ ψ. θέμις ἐστὶν . Aeschin.1.130; “. ταῖς μαρτυρίαιςD.47.1, cf. Is.3.11; . [τῇ μαρτυρίᾳ] ὡς ψευδεῖ οὔσῃ denounce it as false, Din.1.52:—also in Act., Pl.Tht.145ccodd., Jul. Or.6.186b:—hence Pass., “ἐὰν ἐπισκηφθῇ τὰ ψευδῆ μαρτυρῆσαιPl.Lg. 937b: generally, πρὸς τῆς θανούσης . . ἐπεσκήπτου wast denounced, accused, S.Ant.1313:—so in Act., blame, “τινίJul.Or.7.239a.
