A.producing, nourishing, fostering, epith. of gods, as of Poseidon, Clara Rhodos 6/7.386 (Camirus, iii/ii B. C.), Plu.2.158e, IG22.5051, 12(1).905 (Rhodes), etc.; of Zeus, Hsch., cf. IG12(5).13(Ios); of parents, “φυτάλμιοι γέροντεςA.Ag.327; “μητρὶ καὶ φ. πατρίS.Fr.788; λέκτρα φ. the marriage bed, E.Rh.920; φ. χθών Lyc.l.c.: “τὸ φ.productive power, Plu.2.994b.
II. by birth, ἀλαῶν ὀμμάτων ἆρα καὶ ἦσθα φυτάλμιος; didst thou bring blind eyes with thee to life? S.OC151 (lyr.). (φυτάλμιος is said by EM803.4. to be formed by metath. from φυτάλιμος, which is prob. coined ad hoc.
