ναίω , poet. Verb, Act. (intr.) only in pres. and impf. (Ep.
A.“ναίεσκον” Il.5.708), fut. and aor. in causal and Med. and Pass. forms, v. infr. 11, 111:
1. of persons, dwell, abide, mostly folld. by a Prep. of Place, ἐν Λ̔́ῃ, etc., Il.l.c., etc.; “ῥοῇς ἔπι Σαγγαρίοιο” 16.719; “ἐπ᾽ ἄκρων ὀρέων” S. OT1105 (lyr.); “κατὰ πτόλιν” Il.2.130; “ἀν᾽ οὔρεα” Hes.Th.130; “πὰρ ποταμόν” Il.2.522; “ὑπὸ Πλάκῳ” 6.396: c. dat. loci, “αἰθέρι ναίων” 2.412, Hes. Op.18, etc.; “ν. μετά τινος” S.Ph.1105 (lyr.): metaph., τὴν σὴν δ᾽ ὁμοῦ ναίουσαν [ὀργήν] Id.OT338; “τὰν ἀρετὰν ναίειν ἐπὶ πέτραις” Simon.58: with Adv., [“κακότης] ἐγγύθι ναίει” Hes.Op.288; “ἵνα αἱ Φορκίδες ναίουσι” A.Pr.794. b. c. acc. loci, dwell in, inhabit, οἰκία, δώματα, Od.20.288, Hes.Op.8, cf. Pi.P.7.5, al.; ἅλα, πλάκας ὀρέων, E.Hel.1584, Ba. 719; freq. with place-names, Il.2.615, Alex.22, etc.: metaph., Πειθὼ ναίει καὶ Χάρις υἱὸν Ἀγησίλα dub. in Pi.Fr.123.10; of the statues of gods, “πρόπυλα ναίουσιν τάδε” S.El.1375:—Pass., to be inhabited, Id.Fr. 1125 (in aor. ἐνάσθη), etc.; “πολίταις” Theoc.16.88; “ὑπ᾽ ἀνδράσι” A.R.1.794.
2. of places, lie, be situated, once in Hom., “νήσων αἳ ναίουσι πέρην ἁλός” Il.2.626; “ὦ κλεινὰ Σαλαμίς, σὺ μέν που ναίεις ἁλίπλακτος” S. Aj.598 (lyr.).
II. causal, in Ep. aor. ἔνασσα or νάσσα, Med. ἐνασσάμην:
1. c. acc. loci, give one to dwell in, καί κέ οἱ Ἄργεϊ νάσσα πόλιν I would have given him a town in Argos for his home, Od.4.174; make habitable, build, “νηὸν ἔνασσαν” h.Ap.298; settle, “Εὔβοιαν ἕλον καὶ ἔνασσαν” Pi.Pae.5.36:—in Med., found, “μυρία δ᾽ ἄστη νάσσατ᾽ ἐποιχόμενος” A.R.4.275:—in Pass., of places, like Act.1.2, to be situated, “πολίων εὖ ναιομενάων” Il.3.400, al.
2. c. acc. pers., let one dwell, settle him, “ἐν Ἄργει ἔνασσεν Ἡρακλέος ἐκγόνους” Pi.P.5.71:— in Med., “νάσσατο κούρην” A.R.4.567.
III. Med. and Pass. in act. sense, fut. “νάσσομαι” Id.2.747: Ep. aor. 1 “νάσσατο” Hes.Op.639, Dem.Bith.6, Philet.24; later 3pl. “ναιήσαντο” D.P.349: pf. “νένασται” IG14.1389i8; part. “νενασμένος” D.P.264: aor. Pass. ἐνάσθην, πατὴρ ἐμὸς Ἄργεϊ νάσθη my father settled at Argos, Il.14.119.—More freq. in Compos. with ἀπό, κατά.
