I.a large and celebrated island of the Nile, in Ethiopia, now the province of Atbar, Mela, 1, 9, 2; Plin. 2, 73, 75, § 184; Ov. F. 4, 570; Luc. 10, 303; Juv. 6, 528.—Transf., in a lusus verbb. with merum, of a tippling woman (cf. merobibus), Aus. Epigr. 20.—Hence, -rŏētĭcus , a, um, adj., of or belonging to Meroë, Meroëtic: “ebenus Meroëtica,Luc. 10, 117 Cort. (al. Mareotica).
