Cerussa

ψιμύθιον). White-lead, or plumbi subcarbonas. The ancient ceruse was prepared by exposing lead to the vapours of vinegar, and the whole method is minutely described by Theophrastus (De Lapid. 101). Similar processes are described by Dioscorides and Vitruvius. Cerussa was in common use among women as a face enamel. See Plaut. Most. i. 3.101.
