Doctus
A title given by the Roman writers to various poets, especially to Pacuvius
(
Epist. ii. 1, 56) and Catullus (
Ovid,
Amor. iii. 9, 62;
Mart. viii. 73, 8). It is to be understood in the sense of
“accomplished,” “polished.” Cf. Hor.
Odes, i. 1, 29, where it is applied to poets in general, as being taught by the
Muses.
