Malleŏlus

A sort of rocket or torch, used in naval warfare, having a mass of lighted pitch or tar at one end. It was employed to set fire to the enemy's rigging; or in sieges, like the more modern fire-ball. See Cic. Cat. i. 13, 32; Livy xlii. 64.
