CYMA´TIUM (
κῦμα,
κυμάτιον), in arch. (1) the volute of an Ionic
capital (
Vitr. 3.5,
7
; 4.1, 7); (2) a moulding, either the
cavetto (cy.
doricum), or the
cyma recta or
revesa (cy. lesbium,
κ.
Λἐσβιον). Vitruvius mentions the cymatium of a lintel (4.6,
2), of the epistyle (3.5, 10), and of the cornice (3.5, 11). The Greek term
occurs :
