GOGARE´NE

GOGARE´NE (Γωγαρηνή), a canton of Armenia, which Strabo (xi p,. 528) places to the N. of the Cyrus. It is the same as the Armenian Koukar or Kowkark'h, and is represented by the modern Akhaltskhlaï, lying between Guria, Imiretia, Georgia, and the river Jorák. St. Martin (Mém. sur l'Armsenie, vol. i. p. 81) corrects the reading Ὠβαρηνοί in Stephanus of Byzantium (s. v.) into Γωγαρηνοί.
