Monta'nus, Votie'nus
was an orator and declaimer in the reign of Tiberius. From his propensity to refine upon thought and diction, he was named the " Ovid" of the rhetorical schools. Seneca the rhetorician describes the eloquence of Montanus (
Contr. Proonm. iv.,
excerpt. 9.5), and cites him (
Contr. 18, 20, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32). Montanus was convicted on a charge of majestas, and died an exile in the Balearic islands A. D. 25. (
Tac. Ann. 4.42; Euseb.
Chron. a. 778.)
